Creating a visitor-friendly campus wayfinding system for a world-class trauma center and teaching campus

Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital is known for providing exceptional care for its diverse patients over the years. Its heritage spans from the 1800s to the present and it needed a wayfinding system to help patients and visitors navigate a campus populated by legacy Victorian buildings and new construction.

Shannon Leigh is working with ZSFGH’s multiple agencies and stakeholders to modernize and renew the branding and wayfinding on the campus. Our approach started by researching and surveying visitor and staff experiences, and then developing a phased approach to implement wayfinding to coincide with the renovation plan. Challenges include designing signage and wayfinding solutions that coordinate in both historical and new construction, while advancing accessibility using multilingual signage, digital displays. and virtual mapping technologies.   Placemaking is balanced with efficient wayfinding to aid visitors navigating the lifesaving trauma center, medical offices, and world class research facilities.

Multiple wayfinding strategies, including color coded building zones, clear building portals, and interior zip codes, help guide visitors through the campus. Traffic flow research has been completed, new wayfinding and signage has been installed in a newly renovated building, and now a universal wayfinding system are being implemented for the next departments being relocated. We’re proud to be part of this important project that serves a dynamic and diverse community.
